TOP TIPS FROM Dr. Hwang

Tooth whitening is either restoration of natural tooth shade or whitening beyond natural tooth shade.

Sometimes, restoration of the underlying, natural tooth shade is possible by simply removing surface (extrinsic) stains (e.g. from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco) and calculus (tartar). This is achieved by having the teeth cleaned by a dental professional (commonly termed "scale and polish").

Lighter tooth shade can be achieved by chemical whitening, however it should be done by professional guidance in order to avoid permanent teeth sensitivity or deteriorating health of your gum tissue.

Brushing is timing. What does that mean?

It means you should brush on the right timing. Some people complain that they have cavities again and again, even though they brush their teeth everyday. What is the problem? Is he not brushing well? Or, does he have soft teeth?

Well, it is different case by case, but from what I noticed from my experience, people brush at the wrong time.

If you like to know how to improve your oral health, please visit us. We will give the right recommendation which is customized for you.

A tooth is like a tire. It never regenerates.

Have you seen a tire restoring itself? Have you seen a tire fix its hole by itself? I have not seen one yet.

When I was young, I had cavities. I did not tell my mother about it, because I was afraid of dentists. And, I always hoped that if I brush the cavity very well, it might go away. However, it never did. It became bigger and bigger, and eventually I had to go to a dentist. So, a tooth is like a tire. It needs its hole filled by a professional. As you wait longer, the problem just becomes bigger. Smaller cavities are so easy to fix, but bigger cavities need more time and money. So, why wait?

Root canal therapy is done when the nerve inside of a tooth becomes infected or dead. It is necessary in order to avoid any bad consequences from the infection such as pain and swelling and eventually losing a tooth.

However, it is better to avoid it if we can. When you have a toothache, it can come from several different problems. Depending on the problem, the treatment can be a simple filling or just covering exposed root surface. Also, after the root canal therapy, the tooth loses all the nutrient from the pulp which makes it brittle and easier to break. Therefore, it is very important to diagnose the problem before jumping into a root canal treatment.

The pain level is a good indicator for a problem, but it is no the absolute indicator for the root canal. You must have a dentist who will take enough time to make a accuate diagnosis.

FAQ

In general, the brushing technique is more important than the tooth paste. If you are brushing and flossing thoroughly, the choice of tooth paste is not very critical as long as it is ADA(American Dental Association) approved. The tooth paste is basically an abrassive with foaming effect that removes plaque build-up from you teeth. Also, most tooth pastes containt fluoride which is a chemicals that helps re-mineralizing affected teeth. There are special tooth pastes for prevention of sensitivity, prevention of tartar build-up, or whitening effect.
A lot of times we blame sugar as the only cause of a decay. But, in reality, a decay is product of three entity: Sugar, Bacteria, and Time. We love sweets. So do the bacterias inside our mouth. They eat sugar and digest it and produces acidic substance. These acid de-mineralizes the tooth, and if it is left without intervention, it will cause cavity. Therefore, the cavity will not develop as long as there is no bacteria or no time to digest the sugar. Also, we can intervene the cavity developing process by using fluoride tooth paste and thorough brushing to eliminate bacterial colonies inside the plaque.
Not necessarily. If you have a correct brushing and flossing technique, a regular tooth brush can work as good as an electric tooth brush.
The bad breath can come from different sources such as tartar and plaque build-up, dry-mouth, or stomach problem. If you have a bad breath, the first thing we look at is the oral hygiene. If you don't have tartar build-up and you keep very good oral hygiene, the next step is checking if you have a dry-mouth. Usually, the cause is one of these two. Dry-mouth can be prevented by drinking enough water and avoiding salty food. But, some dry-mouth condition is associated with your general health, and it needs extra attention.
